Digging Deeper: The Harm of Hidden Thought Life
“A hidden thought life eventually becomes a harmful thought life.”
Thoughts are very powerful things. They can determine our entire outlook on life. They can tint our past and set us up for future failures. They can destroy relationships, be the cause for dangerous decisions, and lead us down the wrong path in life. Many of the negative thoughts are lies we believe because we can never convince ourselves of other truths. And that’s the real danger: we become stuck in a harmful cycle of negative thoughts when we don’t allow truths in.
Think about a time when you allowed a single thought to grow into something that controlled your emotions and your actions. Maybe you thought you weren’t attractive enough, or you’re not good enough. Maybe it was even the lie that you are unlovable and will never be worthy of another’s love. If you feed that thought enough, it will eventually grow into a lifestyle. No matter what, you will continually embody that lie, and it will become the foundation of your behaviors, relationships, and decisions.
How do you break this ugly cycle? The first step is acknowledging the thought as a complete lie. In 2 Corinthians 10:5, we are told to “take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” Never forget that you have control over your thoughts. Don’t let them control you.
The second step in breaking the cycle of negativity is to bring it to light. As Pastor Josh says, “A hidden thought life eventually becomes a harmful thought life.” By keeping our negative thoughts to ourselves, we are only setting ourselves up for failure. Ephesians 4:25 says plainly, “So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body.” If you have are struggling with harmful thoughts, share them with a trusted advisor, mentor, or friend who can help you work through them and speak life into your situation.
