How to Conquer Your Fears

Is it possible to conquer your fears?

Fear can be a dangerous thing. It can cripple us from living life to the fullest. It can cause us to conjure up thoughts of doubts, anxiety, worry, and disbelief. But where does fear come from? And is it possible to really face your fears and overcome them?

The history of fear

You may be surprised to find that most fears are actually learned traits, meaning they are not something we are innately born with. With the exception of the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises, every other fear was something we picked up along the way. So while your fear of rejection, abandonment, loss, or any other acquired fear may have been a struggle for a while, it was something that was picked up at some point in your life, meaning it can also be overcome.

How you can conquer your fears today

Conquering your fears may feel like an impossible task, but it can be done with some disciplines and guardrails you set up. Here are some ways you can face your fears:

Pray for strength.

In Mark 11:24, Jesus tells us, “I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours.” Whatever you are dealing with, no matter how big or small, ask for strength from God to overcome it. Never forget that He promises to give you what you ask for in prayer. Just rely on His strength and power to conquer fears you may be facing.

Meditate on God’s promises.

There are so many promises outlined in the Bible that you can find to bring you reassurance during seasons of worry or anxiety. Here are just a few:

Exodus 14:14
“The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.”

Isaiah 40:29
He gives power to the weak
   and strength to the powerless.

Isaiah 41:13
“For I hold you by your right hand—
   I, the Lord your God.
And I say to you,
‘Don’t be afraid. I am here to help you.’”

Deuteronomy 31:8
“Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.”

Psalm 27:1
The Lord is my light and my salvation—
so why should I be afraid?
The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger,
   so why should I tremble?

Find encouragement through worship songs.

Praise is one of the best weapons we have against fear. Praise God in the midst of trying times allows us to shift the focus off of our situation and onto Him and His goodness. It gives us confidence in Him and gives Him glory. There are many songs that have powerful lyrics, such as “Stand In Your Love” by Bethel Music:

My fear doesn’t stand a chance when I stand in Your love.
